What are Building Regulations, and who enforces them? Building Regulations set minimum standards for design, construction, and safety.

When do I need Building Regulations approval? Most building work requires approval, including new buildings, extensions, loft and garage conversions, structural changes, drainage, heating systems, replacement windows, and most electrical work in dwellings. Some minor works are exempt.

What types of work are exempt from Building Regulations? Common exemptions include small, detached single-storey buildings under 15 m², certain porches and conservatories up to 30 m² (with external-quality doors/windows between the dwelling and the conservatory and independent heating), open-sided carports up to 30 m², and like-for-like repairs.
